Archaeology

Cosmos Archaeology undertook Aboriginal and historic cultural heritage assessments of an old seawall in Sorrento, before it was removed as part of local council works. The project was a collaboration between the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, and proposed to remove the failing timber seawall, and replace it with a new, stepped concrete version. During their research, our archaeologists discovered the former seawall, constructed in 1908, was markedly different to the original alignment constructed in 1872. As a result, Cosmos Archaeology prepared an archival recording of the Sorrento Seawall prior to works and also undertook archaeological monitoring during the demolition and excavation. This included the in situ recording of structural remains and any potential artefacts.
