Cane Barge and Ferry at Ferry Park, Maclean: Statement of Heritage Impact

Clarence Valley Council had resolved to prepare a Development Application for the removal of the former Ashby Ferry and Cane Punt No. 6 from Ferry Park, Maclean, adjacent to the Pacific Highway. The former Ashby Ferry is the last purpose-built ferry for the Maclean-Ashby Ferry crossing, and Cane Punt No. 6 is a characteristic and representative punt and likely the only accessible example from the extensive fleet that worked on the Clarence River. These vessels are listed on the Clarence Valley Local Environment Plan 2011 as Item I194. Council engaged Cosmos Archaeology to undertake a Statement of Heritage Impact for removal. The assessment included historical research, a site inspection, significance assessments for the vessels then the assessment of a number of options regarding their future management. The most favourable option was relocation of the vessels to the nearby Lawrence Museum for restoration and interpretation as part of a potential exhibit of working vessels.
