Employees of Cosmos Archaeology travelled to Adelaide recently to attend the 2022 Australasian Institute of Maritime Archaeology conference. This year’s conference was a celebration and reflection on the growth of our discipline, with 2022 marking 40 years of AIMA as an organisation and contributor to Australasian maritime archaeology. It was also the 20-year anniversary of the Maritime Archaeology Program at Flinders University, from which a number of our employees have graduated.

Cosmos Archaeology employees at the 2022 AIMA Conference from L – R, Connor McBrian, Milly Bendell, Philippe Kermeen and Tara Chilcott.

The conference focused on inclusiveness in our field and the decolonising of maritime archaeology. Attendees were able to engage in dialogue around the meaning, approaches and lessons for ‘decolonising’ maritime archaeology, maritime museums, and underwater cultural heritage. A highlight of the event was the keynote speaker, Jay Haigler from the amazing team behind DWP (Diving With a Purpose) based in the US.
